Tucked inside a beautifully renovated historic firehouse in Plymouth, Firehouse Flowers is bringing a fresh, artful approach to floral design on the South Shore. Known for their seasonal blooms, garden-inspired arrangements, and thoughtful attention to each customer’s experience, this woman-owned, family-run studio has quickly become a local favorite for everything from everyday bouquets to unforgettable wedding florals. We recently caught up with Grace Collard from Firehouse Flowers to learn more about their journey, their design philosophy, and what makes creating with flowers so special.
Life in Massachusetts (LIM): For readers who may be discovering you for the first time, can you share the story behind Firehouse Flowers and how it all began?
Firehouse Flowers (FF): My journey began at Bristol Agricultural High School, where I majored in Floriculture and discovered a lifelong passion for floral design. After graduating, I designed wedding florals for a professor’s side business, putting classroom skills into practice. Drawn to the creativity of New Orleans, I spent four years working with some of the city’s top florists, refining my craft and gaining a deep understanding of the florist business and industry. Ready to build my own brand and find the ideal studio, I returned to my home state of Massachusetts to open my floral business.
LIM: Your name is so distinctive. What’s the story behind “Firehouse Flowers”?
FF: Our business name was simply inspired by our location. Located in the Historic District of Plymouth, Massachusetts, my studio is nestled inside a renovated, century-old firehouse that we felt needed to be honored. We also felt the name had a nice ring to it, so the decision came quite easily to me.
LIM: What inspired you to open a flower shop in Plymouth, and what do you love most about being part of this community?
My family lives in Plymouth, and after 4 years of being in New Orleans, I was ready to return back to the northeast and be closer to family. In addition to the love of the coastline and all that the town offers, I am so proud to be part of the Plymouth community. It’s a great cross section of both longtime and new residents, the people are down to earth, and there’s a sense of pride living here. As a whole, the people of Plymouth want the town and the people within the community to be successful and a place to enjoy and where others want to visit.
LIM: How would you describe the personality or style of Firehouse Flowers?
Firehouse Flowers is a woman owned, family run business, and our personality reflects just that. We are hardworking, supportive, and collectively invested in creating an exceptional experience for our customers while building a business we’re proud of. Our foundation is rooted in talent, experience, and trust. Above all, we believe in doing right by our customers and by ourselves.

FF: Unlike most florists, we don’t offer a “pick and choose” menu. Every arrangement we create is one of a kind, thoughtfully designed using seasonal blooms that rotate weekly. This approach ensures optimal freshness and allows us to craft artful, inspired designs.
Developing a distinct style is not only inevitable, it’s essential. While a skilled florist can execute a variety of aesthetics, most designers naturally gravitate toward a signature look. Our floral style is often described as timeless, free-flowing, and garden-inspired.
LIM: What are some of your most popular arrangements or services right now?
In addition to vase arrangements of all sizes, wedding arbor and arch installations, and classic wrapped bouquets, our signature “Bouquet Bar” has become especially popular over the past year. Offered as either a DIY experience or a fully staffed service (complete with our bouquet “bud-tenders”), the Bouquet Bar is a favorite for bridal and baby showers. It transforms flowers into both an interactive event activity and a beautiful take home party favor. We provide a tiered display with a thoughtfully curated, customized flower selection, giving guests the opportunity to build their own bouquets and leave with a stunning, personal reminder of the celebration.
LIM: Wedding and event florals can be such a special part of someone’s big day. What do you love most about working on those milestone moments?
FF: What we love most about designing wedding and event florals is the opportunity to be truly creative, tapping into our talent and skills while bringing someone’s vision to life. Playing a role in someone’s most special day is both an honor and incredibly fulfilling. In the end, seeing a bride and groom over the moon happy with how their celebration looks is our greatest motivation, and our most rewarding accomplishment.

LIM: How do you help customers who walk in and say, “I have no idea what I want!”?
FF: This happens all the time, and we’ve found that asking thoughtful questions is the best place to start. We’ll gently uncover whether the flowers are for personal enjoyment or a gift. Is it for a special occasion, a kind gesture, or a moment of sympathy? Where will the flowers live? (in a home, restaurant, venue, or church?). Is there a price point they’d like to stay within? Do they have favorite flowers or colors? By narrowing down these details, we’re able to guide each customer toward a design that feels intentional, personal, and perfectly suited to their needs. Even if they walk in unsure, they always leave confident in their choice, and excited about what we’ve created for them.
LIM: Do you have a favorite flower or seasonal bloom you especially love working with?
FF: You’d think this would be an easy question for a florist, but it’s a bit like choosing a favorite family member! We actually talk about this often while processing flowers. It’s easy to fall in love with whatever spectacular bloom happens to be on the table that day and declare it your “favorite”. That said, if we had to narrow it down, dahlias, anthurium, orchids, and peonies always rise to the top. We truly love them all equally, and we’re absolutely not picking just one. LOL!
LIM: How do the seasons in Massachusetts influence your designs and offerings throughout the year?
FF: While our flower wholesalers are wonderful, and absolutely essential, there’s truly no comparison to locally grown blooms. Local flowers skip the long process of being packaged and shipped across the globe, which can take a toll on their condition. Because of that, we’re incredibly grateful for the talented local growers in our area and source from them whenever possible during their growing season. Only certain varieties are grown locally, so we always encourage customers to embrace what’s in season and take advantage of the exceptional freshness, vibrant condition, and longevity that locally grown flowers offer. That said, proper processing and hydration are key. Knowing how to care for and prepare every stem, whether local or imported, ensures our customers enjoy beautiful, long lasting blooms all year long.
And living in the Northeast, we’re constantly inspired by the beauty of all four seasons. Those seasonal shifts naturally influence our color palettes, textures, and overall design style.

LIM: What has been one of your most memorable moments or projects since opening?
One of my most memorable moments as a floral designer happened just after I finished setting up wedding flowers at Red Lion Inn. The design included a large-scale floral installation cascading along their grand staircase. Before the ceremony, the bride and her mother came out to “check on the progress.” As they approached me, both had tears in their eyes. They told me the flowers had far exceeded anything they could have imagined and that they were overwhelmed with happiness. It truly touched me. I felt such pride in that moment, and so much joy knowing they were so pleased. It’s a memory I will never forget, and it continues to motivate me. Ultimately, my goal is for every client to feel that same sense of excitement, beauty, and heartfelt satisfaction on their special day.
LIM: Running a small business always comes with surprises. What’s something you’ve learned along the way?
FF: We’ve certainly learned so much in our 2+ years of business!
One lesson that has become even more clear over time is the true importance of customer service. It’s not just about the quality of the product you create or sell, it’s equally about the experience you provide. A customer’s overall experience ultimately determines whether they return to your business or recommend you to others. We intentionally prioritize making every interaction a positive one, from the moment someone walks into or calls our shop, to the design process, to the final delivery. We strive to make each experience personable, memorable, attentive, and seamless.
Hand in hand with great customer service is the importance of building a strong network. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful, and we’ve made it a priority to stay connected within our community, including being active members of the Chamber of Commerce and participating in a local networking group. Those relationships have proven to be so valuable and continue to help us grow!
A big thank you to the team at Firehouse Flowers for taking the time to share their story and giving us a behind-the-scenes look at their beautiful work. If you’re in the Plymouth area and looking for thoughtfully designed, one-of-a-kind floral arrangements—or planning a special event—it’s definitely worth stopping by their historic studio to see what’s blooming. 🌸
