Small Business Spotlight: Golden Hour Tulips

Each spring in Berkley, Massachusetts, a breathtaking sea of color signals the return of tulip season and at the heart of it is Golden Hour Farms. What began as a spark of inspiration from European fields has quickly blossomed into one of the region’s most beloved seasonal experiences. I recently had the chance to speak with owner Derek Nedell about the journey behind the farm, the magic of tulip season, and what makes a visit here so memorable.

Life in Mass (LIM): For readers discovering Golden Hour Farms for the first time, how would you describe the experience of visiting your tulip fields?

Golden Hour Farms (GHF): Visiting Golden Hour Farms is a chance to slow down, get outside, and enjoy something really special. During tulip season, the fields are filled with color, and guests can walk through the rows, take photos, pick their own tulips, and spend time with family and friends. It’s simple, beautiful, and only lasts for a short window each spring, which makes it feel even more special.

LIM: I love the story behind how this all began! Can you share how that initial inspiration from Europe turned into a thriving farm in Berkley?

BHF: The idea started after seeing the incredible tulip fields in Europe and thinking, “Why don’t we have something like that here?” What began as an idea slowly turned into a plan, and in 2020 we planted our first tulips. From there, it grew year after year. We started small, learned a lot, made plenty of mistakes, and kept building. Now Golden Hour Farms has become a place where people from all over New England come to experience spring in a really memorable way.

LIM: Your farm has grown so quickly since starting in 2020. What has that journey been like for you personally?

BHF: It has been exciting, exhausting, stressful, and rewarding all at the same time. Farming is not easy, and building something from the ground up takes a lot of work behind the scenes that people never see. But watching the farm grow and seeing families come back year after year makes it all worth it. Personally, it has taught me patience, problem-solving, and how important it is to keep pushing forward even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

LIM: With over 300,000 tulips planted, what goes into preparing for such a large and beautiful bloom each spring?

BHF: A lot goes into it long before anyone sees a flower. We start planning months in advance, ordering bulbs, preparing the fields, planting in the fall, protecting the crop through the winter, and then managing everything carefully as spring approaches. Weather, drainage, timing, field conditions, staffing, parking, ticketing, and guest experience all have to come together at once. By the time the tulips bloom, there has already been a full year of work behind the scenes.

LIM: Tulip season is so short and special. What makes those few weeks so magical for both you and your visitors?

GHF: The short season is part of what makes it so special. The tulips only bloom for a few weeks, so people know they are experiencing something that will not be there for long. There is an energy in the field during that time, people are happy, taking photos, making memories, and enjoying the start of spring. For us, it is the moment when all the hard work finally comes to life.

LIM: Your mission is centered around bringing joy. What are some of the most memorable moments you’ve seen happen out in the fields?

GHF: Some of the best moments are the simple ones. Families taking photos together, kids picking their first flowers, grandparents walking through the field with grandchildren, and people just stopping to take it all in. We have also seen proposals, maternity photos, family traditions, and visitors who tell us they look forward to coming every year. Those moments remind us why we do it.

LIM: The U-pick experience feels very intentional and well thought out. How did you design it to be enjoyable for families and visitors of all ages?

BHF: We wanted the farm to feel welcoming and easy to enjoy. The goal was to create an experience where people could come for the flowers, but also stay for the memories. We think about parking, field layout, photo opportunities, ticket times, checkout, food trucks, animals, and how people move through the farm. We want it to feel organized but still relaxed, so guests can enjoy the beauty of the field without feeling rushed.

LIM: What are some tips you’d give to someone visiting for the first time to make the most of their experience?

BHF: Wear shoes you do not mind getting a little dirty because it is a real farm and the fields can be uneven or muddy. Bring your camera or phone because there are a lot of great photo opportunities. Buy tickets early because the season is short and time slots can sell out. Also, come with the mindset that bloom timing is controlled by nature, so every visit can look a little different.

LIM: I love that each ticket includes tulips to take home. What do you hope people feel when they leave with their bouquet?

BHF: I hope people feel like they are taking a piece of the experience home with them. The bouquet is more than just flowers, it is the experience that they just had at a beautiful farm, the people they were with, and the start of spring. There is something special about picking your own tulips and then seeing them on your kitchen table afterward.

LIM: Farming is so dependent on nature. Any home gardener knows this, it must be especially true for an operation like yours. How do you navigate the unpredictability of weather and bloom timing each year?

BHF: We do our best to plan, but nature is always in charge. Every year is different. A warm week can push the crop ahead quickly, and a cold stretch can slow everything down. We watch the weather constantly and make adjustments as we go. It can be stressful because tulip season is so short, but it is also part of what makes farming real. You have to be flexible and work with what the season gives you.

LIM: What does a typical day look like for you during peak season?

BHF: During peak season, the days are long and busy. We are checking the fields early, getting parking and staff ready, answering customer questions, handling tickets, managing the flow of guests, restocking supplies, solving whatever problems come up, and making sure the farm looks good for visitors. There is always something happening. It is a lot of work, but seeing people enjoy the farm keeps the energy going.

LIM: You’ve created something that brings people together. How has the local community supported and shaped Golden Hour Farms?

BHF: The local community has been a huge part of our growth. People from the surrounding towns supported us early on, shared our posts, told their friends, and came back year after year. Local vendors, food trucks, photographers, and other small businesses have also helped shape the experience. We are really grateful that the community has embraced the farm and helped it become what it is today.

LIM: Looking ahead, are there any new ideas or experiences you’re excited to introduce in the future?

BHF: We are always thinking about ways to improve the farm and add new experiences, while still keeping the main focus on flowers, farming, and family-friendly events. We would love to continue improving the guest experience, adding more seasonal offerings, and creating more reasons for people to visit throughout the year. The goal is to keep growing carefully and make each season better than the last.

LIM: Finally, what does Golden Hour Farm mean for you?

GHF: Golden Hour Farms means a lot to me because it is something built from scratch with a lot of hard work, risk, and faith. It represents family, community, farming, and creating something that brings people joy. When I see people walking through the fields smiling, taking pictures, and making memories, it reminds me that all the long days and hard work are worth it.

From the careful planning behind the scenes to the joyful moments shared out in the fields, it’s clear that Golden Hour Farms is about so much more than flowers, it’s about creating lasting memories. Whether it’s your first visit or a yearly tradition, the experience captures the very best of a New England spring. As Derek so thoughtfully shared, it’s those simple, meaningful moments that make all the hard work worthwhile and give visitors something beautiful to carry home long after the season ends.
