Small Business Spotlight: Sugarloaf Gardens

Tucked into the beautiful landscape at the base of Mount Sugarloaf, Sugarloaf Gardens has quickly become a destination for gardeners across the Pioneer Valley and beyond. More than just a garden center, it’s a place where plant lovers of every experience level can find inspiration, guidance, and a genuine sense of community. I recently had the chance to speak with the team about their passion for gardening, the vision behind the business, and how they’re helping people across Massachusetts create outdoor spaces that feel vibrant, welcoming, and alive.
Life in Mass (LIM): For readers discovering Sugarloaf Gardens for the first time, how would you describe what makes your garden center special?
Sugarloaf Gardens (SG): What makes Sugarloaf Gardens special is the experience. We focus on providing a welcoming, educational environment where customers feel supported, whether they’re lifelong gardeners or just getting started. We combine a high-quality selection of plants with a team that genuinely loves gardening and takes pride in helping customers succeed. We are dedicated to helping people and the community build beautiful outdoor spaces that encourage the enjoyment of nature.

LIM: Sugarloaf Gardens opened relatively recently, right? What inspired the vision behind creating this space for the community?
SG: We’re currently in our 5th season. The vision was to create a place that anyone could feel confident that what they are buying is well cared for and of the highest quality. We wanted to build a destination where people can come to learn, get inspired, and feel confident in their gardening decisions. The goal has always been to combine expert knowledge with a strong sense of quality plants and community.
LIM: The location at the base of Mount Sugarloaf is really beautiful. How does that setting influence the experience you aim to create?
SG: Being located near Mount Sugarloaf gives us a natural advantage—it’s a beautiful, peaceful setting that enhances the entire experience. As the seasons change, we are constantly updating our displays with different ideas for plant and color combinations. Some customers have commented that they think of it as a living, constantly-changing art exhibit.
LIM: Your team brings over 75 years of combined experience. How does that depth of knowledge shape the way you serve customers?
SG: That level of experience and knowledge allows us to go beyond simple recommendations. We can help customers think through long-term success, what will thrive in their space, how to care for it, and how to design something that grows beautifully over time.
LIM: Can you tell us a bit about the team and what each person brings to the table?

SG: Dan Ziomek, our manager, brings specialized knowledge of trees, shrubs, plant disease, and birds to the team. He’s great to talk with about large landscaping designs, and would love to help you build a garden that will feed the birds year-round! Eliza Healy is a “gardener’s gardener,” who is wonderful at building gardens that balance plants of all types. She is particularly talented at creating eye-catching container gardens and is a lover of punchy color combinations. Val Miller is our inventory manager-extraordinaire, with a background in protecting wetlands. She loves designing gardens to attract cute creatures using a wide variety of plants. Trey Wilson knows our tree yard backward and forward, and even spent his winter studying Japanese in order to better get to know our Japanese maples. There are also many other team members, each enthusiastic in their own way about gardening!
LIM: Mentorship and sharing plant knowledge seem central to your mission. Why is that so important to you?

SG: We believe gardening should be enjoyable, not intimidating. By sharing knowledge and mentoring customers, we help remove that barrier. When people understand what they’re doing and why, they’re more successful, and that creates a much better overall experience.
LIM: You offer everything from trees and shrubs to edible plants and garden materials. How do you curate what you carry?
SG: We focus on quality first. Every plant and product we carry is selected with intention, including where we buy it from. We base selection on performance in our climate, reliability, and value for the customer. We aim to offer a wide selection, making it easier to find the right fit for anyone’s needs.
LIM: For someone just starting their gardening journey, what would you recommend they begin with?
SG: Start simple and build confidence. Choose a few easy-to-maintain plants that match your space and sunlight conditions. More importantly, ask questions, we’re here to guide you step by step so you can learn as you go and enjoy the process.
LIM: Native plants and pollinator-friendly gardening are growing trends. How do you help customers incorporate those into their landscapes?
SG: We help guide customers toward native and pollinator-friendly options that work well in their specific environment. We explain the benefits and make it easy to incorporate these plants in a way that’s both functional and visually appealing. We have special areas at the garden center clearly labeled for both native plants and pollinator friendly plants.
LIM: You emphasize building relationships with customers. What does that look like day-to-day in the garden center?

SG: It means taking the time to listen, ask questions, and follow up. We want customers to come back, share their progress, and continue learning with us. That ongoing relationship is what we strive for.
LIM: What’s a memorable customer success story that really captures what Sugarloaf Gardens is all about?
SG: Recently we had a customer come in to replace some trees which were dying, but were a key part of her landscape. During her visit we were able to find some new, beautiful crabapples for her. Not only that, we also introduced her to a local gardener who was at the store that day who could install them for her. She easily was able to get the work done thanks to this community connection, and now has a gorgeous refresh for her landscape!
LIM: How do you help customers feel confident when taking on new landscaping or gardening projects?
SG: We break things down into manageable steps and provide clear, practical guidance. From plant selection to care instructions, we make sure customers leave with a plan, not just products.
LIM: How does Sugarloaf Gardens connect with and support the local Pioneer Valley community?
SG: We’re committed to being part of the community by offering a resource people can rely on. Whether it's helping homeowners improve their landscapes or simply providing a welcoming place to visit. We participate in many non-profits and local charities, provide educational sessions at both the garden center and at gardening clubs.

LIM: What role do you think local garden centers play in enhancing both homes and neighborhoods across Massachusetts?
SG: Local garden centers play a huge role in shaping how communities look and feel. They help homeowners create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces, which ultimately enhances neighborhoods and encourages people to spend more time outdoors.
LIM: As you continue to grow, what are you most excited about for the future of Sugarloaf Gardens?
SG: We’re excited to continue expanding our offerings, deepening our customer relationships, and building on the experience we provide. Our goal is to do this with a new storefront that we plan to build out over time and continue providing our customers with everything they need. Ultimately our focus remains the same, delivering high-quality plants, exceptional service, and a team that truly enjoys helping people succeed.
What stood out most in this conversation was the heart behind everything Sugarloaf Gardens does. From mentoring first-time gardeners to helping longtime plant enthusiasts bring ambitious landscape ideas to life, their focus remains firmly rooted in community, education, and a love of the natural world. As they continue to grow and evolve, it’s clear they’re cultivating far more than beautiful gardens—they’re creating connections that help people feel more at home in the outdoors and in their community.
